Working with babies and under 5s in museums

Exciting training for museum and gallery staff who work with babies and young children or would like to develop this area of service delivery. The course explores effective provision for under 5s and their families, and identifies ways to support learning and foster engagement and fun.

This course is suitable for national and regional bodies and as in-house training. Anne tailors all her training to client and delegate needs.

Expected learning outcomes:

  • more awareness of early child development and the early years foundation stage areas of learning and how museums can support these
  • practical, cost-effective ideas for good family-friendly provision
  • ideas for successful sessions for babies and under 5s, with tips for maximising enjoyment and participation and managing behaviour
  • more confidence in choosing and using artefacts and other resources
  • new ways to support parents and carers and encourage family learning
  • greater knowledge of current legislation and child safety issues

Delegates receive comprehensive handouts, including sources of further information, case studies, strategies for supporting babies' and young children's learning and ideas for successful family engagement.

Great course! Lots of new ideas and strategies to take back to work. Tutor was lovely, very knowledgeable and communicated very well.

This is an area of work I knew very little about. I feel much more confident now.

Content and structure was great – lots of time for discussion. I also thought the use of quotes, photography and film really useful.

Excellent, a very informative and interesting course. Very excited to go back and start developing new initiatives.

Great summary of child development and ideas as to how museums can structure activities to support this.

Excellent trainer, very knowledgeable.

Inspirational. It was great to tap into your experience and I will be using this course as a tool to set up provision for families and young children. Many thanks for making me get rid of the fear factor of initiating this programme.

Ideas on how to interact with little ones effectively.

Interesting and informative, and very enjoyable and constructive too.

Loved Anne’s open-minded approach. Lovely course.

The content will directly contribute to the areas I am currently working on. I enjoyed the balance of talking, real-life examples and activities.

I feel really energised.

As a result of today I’m going to organise a ‘babies in museums’ day, and put together a props and books bag.

I will feel more confident now in workshops with small children and preparing material for them to use, really enjoyable events.

Very interesting and informative, lots to think about. Just right.

It was a good open session, I enjoyed hearing everyone’s experience and feedback on working with this age group.

Found it very interesting and Anne was excellent. Looking forward to developing some of the many ideas I’m leaving with.

Anne has a lovely and passionate way of imparting her knowledge and ideas. Would recommend her to anyone not sure or confident in how to open their doors to little people.
