Reading problems: reading challenges

A popular, practical course on reading problems, reading reluctance and the impact of social exclusion on children's reading. The course is appropriate for public library staff, school librarians, further education librarians, teachers and teaching assistants.

Anne gives this course for national and regional bodies and for local authorities. It is fully participative, with opportunities throughout for sharing concerns, ideas and good practice. It is backed up with comprehensive handouts.

Expected learning outcomes include:

  • more understanding of the causes and effects of reading difficulties and reluctance to read
  • enhanced appreciation of the role of libraries in overcoming them
  • practical strategies for promoting reading
  • greater awareness of appropriate resources for less able and less keen readers
  • additional methods for exploiting them successfully
  • extra confidence when helping children, young people, parents and carers

What people say about this course

I have a better insight into the needs of the students and more confidence in how to approach those that have special needs and reluctant readers.

It was stimulating and challenging even to an old hand like me.

Plenty of follow-up material to give further ideas.

Excellent. There are so many ideas that I wish to put in place immediately.
