Reading for mindfulness and wellbeing

This new, interactive, hands-on course provides a much-needed opportunity to explore the value of books and reading for children's mental health and to identify strategies for using them effectively.

The course is suitable for literacy leaders, class teachers, school and public library staff and other interested practitioners. Anne is happy to adapt it for different key stages, and as national, regional or local authority training or as whole school inset.

Expected learning outcomes include:

  • more understanding of the links between reading and mindfulness and wellbeing
  • new methods for harnessing books and reading to explore issues
  • ideas for using books to develop children's empathy and celebrate difference
  • tips for exploiting books to help children understand emotions and relationships
  • ways to utilise books to build self-esteem and resilience and reduce anxiety
  • an introduction to a wide range of books that can support children's mental health

Participants will receive invaluable handouts, including weblinks, sources of further information and ideas, and a comprehensive list of useful children's books.

What people say about this training

What an inspiring course. I'm leaving feeling like there are lots of things I can positively implement into my school without much effort yet hopefully the impact on our children's wellbeing and motivation for reading will be increased significantly.

Time to stop and reflect how important reading actually is!

Thank you for a very inspiring course. Having the opportunity to views research and discuss best practice has been really useful. The book list provided is also very useful. I am going to go back to school and increase opportunities of reading for mindfulness.

Lots of information on why reading for pleasure is so important.

Really useful and has given me many ideas I can implement back at school. Sharing ideas was really helpful and all the quotes and research shared was very thought provoking.

Brilliant course - very useful and powerful! It's great to know people are on the same journey in making emotional well-being an importance in schools. Loved seeing all the books.

A good course which has offered a good insight into how books can be used to support emotional wellbeing. Good to meet other professionals and share ideas.

Good opportunity to spend time thinking about how my two areas (English and PSHE) link and how they can link further. Good chance to look at and discuss resources/books available plus strategies to use.

I really enjoyed the day! It has made me recognise the importance of reading and I also found many links/research finding to wellbeing and mental health interesting. I aim to share these with staff and look forward to purchasing some new material.

What a treat! Time to discuss thoughts and ideas with other teachers and beautiful books!!

Really caring friendly atmosphere.
