Developing exciting book
corners and class libraries

Reading corners and class libraries play a huge role in enhancing children’s literacy skills and reading enjoyment. However many are under-developed, under-exploited and unexciting. Anne’s training provides answers on how to achieve book corners and class libraries that stimulate and challenge pupils and support teaching across the curriculum.

This training is suitable as whole school inset or for school clusters or local authorities. Anne offers face-to-face and online courses. She tailors all her inset and training to the needs and circumstances of the school or schools involved.

Expected learning outcomes include:

  • greater understanding of the role and potential of class libraries and reading corners
  • the context in terms of latest research, Ofsted and the national curriculum
  • ideas for using class libraries to support reading, writing and comprehension
  • ideas for nurturing reading enjoyment and developing reading communities
  • ways to exploit class libraries to support learning in all areas of the curriculum
  • strategies for creating attractive, effective and dynamic book corners and class libraries
  • ideas for appropriate content

Anne provides useful back-up material to complement this training.

What people say about this training

I wish I had had this much earlier. There is so much more I can do even in my tiny space.

Thank you Anne. We all knew bits and pieces about developing a class library but you enabled us to put the whole thing into context and that the whole process is collaborative.

Lots of practical and innovative ideas for book corners. Great!

Thank you for the extremely current information and research on developing reading for pleasure in schools.

A great course. I am now much more motivated. Looking forward to using all the great ideas.

The day was invaluable to my development as it allowed me to gather ideas from yourself and others, as well as sharing ideas of my own and getting feedback.

Very informative, with lots of fascinating discussion, good shared experiences, and advice to take back to schools.

Generated a lot of thought re my school's current class libraries and how to advise / support staff to develop theirs (and mine).

Great opportunity to share and learn good practice.

I realise now that it’s not just a place to send kids after finishing work. The class library needs to be made a special place in its own right.

This course has given me the ‘oomph’ that we need to revamp the bookshelves in our school.

I will definitely add more appeal to my class library - not just through books.

Thank you most sincerely for a most interesting, informative and colourful course. I look forward to getting ideas implemented into our classrooms.

Great training. Inspiring ideas.

We teachers are guilty of becoming territorial over our spaces but you made us realise the need for more team work and talk as we are all at different stages.

Great ideas to put forward in my school. I loved the discussions and exchanging of experiences.

I was stuck. Now I’m motivated again to change my library round much more regularly.
