Looked after children: the school role

An important new course to explore the needs of looked after children, the statutory responsibilities of the school and practical ways to ensure that these are met effectively.

This training is for virtual school heads and other virtual school staff, local authority LAC coordinators and vulnerable children managers, designated teachers and learning support staff and other interested practitioners. It is appropriate for national bodies and local authorities and as school inset. Anne tailors all her courses to local circumstances and learner needs.

Anne's LAC courses are packed with up-to-date facts, figures and research about best practice. There are opportunities throughout to discuss effective provision and identify plans for improvements. Delegates receive comprehensive information packs to complement the training.

Expected learning outcomes:

  • greater understanding of the reasons children enter care and the issues that face looked after children
  • more awareness of the legal situation and the role and responsibilities of the school and the designated teacher
  • strategies for supporting LAC's educational stability, attainment and emotional well-being
  • ideas for developing and implementing personal educational plans
  • methods for establishing effective liaison within the school and with outside agencies
  • ideas for building good working relationships with carers and birth parents

Anne was excellent. I learnt a lot and feel more confident for my role as a LAC support designated person. Today was fantastic, so very glad I came!

It was very very useful to share best practice, thoughts, feelings and theory. Very practical and will certainly make a difference to the provision for LAC children.

High quality training we can use to build capacity in schools. A breath of fresh air!

Lots of facts to set the current picture. Good structure of the school role, strategies and planning. Useful ideas from other authorities and schools. Lots of time for questions.

Lots of information that was up to date and relevant. Came away with an action plan to undertake within my school. Improved my confidence that what I have been doing is correct.

Very useful and informative. Lots to take away and embed within my own school.

Really enjoyable, interesting day. Interesting discussions, helpful information. Trainer very knowledgeable in subject. Plenty of information shared - great networking.

Useful insight into other LA procedures and systems. Also into how schools help looked after children.

I want all the designated teachers in my authority to have this training.

Brilliant that a small group setting allowed for a lot of questions and speaking to colleagues and trainer about specific needs or things I needed clarifying. Loved it.

Very interactive. Lots of examples and room for sharing good practice. Anne was very knowledgeable but also an excellent facilitator of discussion. Lots to take home.

Excellent. I now know what is needed to be a LAC officer.
