Extended schools and the school library

An extended school is one that provides a range of activities and services, often beyond the school day, to help meet the needs of pupils, their families and the wider community. By September 2010 all schools in the maintained sector are expected to offer extended services.

This interactive course explores the role of the school library in extended schools.

The course is available for the primary or secondary sector, or for both, and is appropriate for school librarians, literacy and library coordinators and teachers.

Anne always adapts the course to local circumstances and needs.

Expected learning outcomes:

  • greater understanding of the extended school initiative and its implications
  • more awareness of the role of the library and more confidence in fulfilling it
  • extra strategies for delivering effective study support and homework help
  • new ideas for supporting family learning and adult education
  • fresh perspectives on the role of the library in supporting the wider community
  • ideas for developing partnership work

The course is accompanied by an extensive set of back-up material.

What people say about this course

Lots to think about - challenging initiative but good for the library. Loads to implement.

It provided a good mixture of short and long term goal ideas along with useful clarification of the benefits of initiatives I already have underway.

It was all very useful, interesting and inspiring.

I have learnt more about the extended school initiative and my own part to play.

This day has given me confidence in approaching my line manager and SMT with ideas to develop.
