Reading in the early years

Anne offers a range of training on encouraging reading and pre-reading skills during the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS).

Her courses explore strategies for helping young children towards a love of books, and for laying the foundations for happy and successful reading.

Anne always tailors these courses to local circumstances and client requirements. They are suitable for national, regional and local authority training, and as in-house training in children's centres and early years settings.

They have been found extremely popular and effective by early years practitioners, teachers, teaching assistants, Bookstart workers, health visitors and library staff.

All Anne’s early years courses are practical and participative, and are backed up with extensive handouts.

Depending on need, topics for consideration can include:

  • early language and reading development
  • the EYFS communication, language and literacy requirements and ways to meet them
  • choosing and using books and other resources
  • fostering children’s language development through dialogic book reading
  • strategies for developing skills and enjoyment through games and play
  • ways to build on the momentum created by the Book Ahead initiative
  • helping parents and carers to support children’s reading effectively and family literacy

The course is backed up with an extensive set of handouts.

What people say about this training

It has made me think more about planning my environment to suit the children, to help them take more of an interest in reading/sharing books.

I now know how to encourage parents with their child's reading, how to answer their questions constructively.

The course made me think about how books can develop readers, what types of books and activities to use to work towards achieving this.
