Early years library provision

Anne provides training for library staff who work with babies and young children or are interested in developing this area of provision. Her courses explore practical, cost-effective ways to encourage library use by families with young children and to foster a love of books and reading.

Anne's training is suitable for national and regional organisations and for local authorities. She tailors all her courses to client and delegate needs.

Expected learning outcomes include:

  • greater understanding of early child development, language and literacy acquisition and the Early Years Foundation Stage areas of learning
  • more awareness of the role of libraries in supporting these
  • effective ways to nurture reading enjoyment and early literacy skills
  • ideas for successful sessions for babies and under 5s, with tips for maximising enjoyment and participation and managing behaviour
  • more confidence in choosing and using rhymes, books and other resources
  • new ideas for supporting parents and carers and encouraging family learning
  • greater knowledge of current legislation and child safety issues

The course is backed up with comprehensive handouts, including lists of websites and publications, case studies, details of early childhood communication, strategies for supporting babies' and young children's learning and ideas for successful family engagement.

What people say about this training

Immensely useful in enabling me to have a better idea of the kind of service we should aim to provide for very young children.

What a fantastic course! Very enjoyable day which gave me a lot to think about. So interesting to focus on the importance of what we are doing in the libraries. Lots of ideas and inspiration.

It's been a really good training day. Lots of ideas buzzing about in my head.

This has encouraged me to keep at it and enforced the importance of working with babies.

Very knowledgeable trainer. Excellent delivery. Great group work.

Anne's experience and vision is inspirational.

Really enjoyed the course and have learnt a great deal today.

New ideas for existing events/practices. Inspiring.

Wonderful! The balance between large group and small group work was perfect. Atmosphere really friendly - not SCARY! Have loads to think about and take in and then put into ACTION!

Thank you. The course was brilliant.

Everyone had a voice and was listened to.

Great to have the theory behind our practice. Lovely to share ideas and take inspiration into my sessions.

Very useful. Has refocused what I would like to achieve with the under 5's.

Learnt a lot about delivering successful story times - particularly helpful to discuss ways to involve parents and carers in the sessions. Enjoyed looking at and discussing books - which would work, how to use them to the best advantage.

Very enjoyable and interesting. Very relevant to our everyday work with babies, toddlers and children.

Really useful. I wouldn't have been able to do all the things I do in the library if it hadn't been for this course.
