I am currently designing a course entitled Cultivating Readers, about developing reading enjoyment at key stages 1 and 2, and I’ve been revisiting some favourite websites and blogs to put on a handout. I thought I would just highlight a few of them here. Two newish ones that many people have not yet come across are The Literacy Shed, which is full of inspiring ideas and lots of great videos promoting books and reading, and Picture Book Plays. The brainchild of Julia Donaldson, this is packed with ways to bring picture books alive through drama. Michael Rosen’s Reading Revolution is not new, but remains very valuable, especially the Get Started section.
For anyone interested in all that parents and carers can do to inspire reading, it’s well worth looking at this recent article by Susan Elkin.
I love all the happy reading going on the picture. I took it in the fabulous library in Oxford Gardens Primary School.
