It’s great to see that the Department for Education website now has several pages on the importance of reading for pleasure and how to foster it. There’s a useful summary of research on the value of reading for pleasure in terms of attitudes and attainment, and lots of practical methods for promoting reading in the library, the classroom and throughout the school. Reading choice, peer recommendation, role models and parental engagement all feature strongly in the strategies and case studies contributed by librarians and teachers, as you would expect, and there are plenty of other good ideas. Definitely worth a visit for anyone interested in children’s and young people’s reading.
I took the photo during a lovely visit to Oxford Gardens Primary School, where inspiring reading for pleasure is a high priority.
